Roofing is one of those things you don’t ever think about until you’ve got water leaking down the bedroom wall and over the head board. And if that’s the first time you’ve discovered a leak, you’ve got no time to waste. Ceilings and walls don’t start to show water damage until they have been saturated and that means the leak in the roof could have started months ago.
Do not choose a contractor who demands payment that does not agree with the terms and conditions of the contract. You should not pay for anything that is not in the contract. Critical matters such as materials, labor and miscellaneous should be covered in the contract.
One of most important things to find out before hiring a roofing contractor is that they are fully licensed and insured. Roofing is a dangerous occupation. Don’t leave yourself open to a devastating liability by hiring an unlicensed roofer. Protect yourself!

Felt (Tar Paper): Felt is a paper that comes in the 15 lb. and 30 lb. variety. 30 lb. is preferred because it is stronger and more durable. The felt should be applied where the winter guard is stopped. (Once again perpendicular to the roof trusses.) When applying you start at the bottom and continue to the top of the roof (the ridge) ensuring that you lap the next piece at least 2″ over the top of the last piece. This ensures that if any water does get under the shingles it runs down the roof to the bottom without ever getting under the tar paper.
Shingles: The shingles go over the top of the felt and winter guard. There are different types of shingles that can be used but I will be explain the proper way to install asphalt shingles. Like the winter guard and felt, the shingles are installed perpendicular to the roof trusses. Once again the shingles are started at the bottom and are applied so they are finished at the top of the roof. The first row of shingles need a starter strip underneath them with tar so that they do not curl up and become exposed to the elements. The seams of the shingles need to be staggered at least 6″ so that water cannot run down the seams.
