With the variety of roof materials available these days, here are six options to help make choosing the right one for your roofing project a little easier.
A word of caution; most roofing companies use felt paper as Roof Deck Protection. Although using felt paper is a standard and acceptable practice, some issues can arise if the felt paper becomes wet during or after the installation. Ever notice how paper tends to curl when it dries after it was wet? In a similar way, felt paper can curl if water or excess moisture touches it. For this reason, and because the cost is quite small, we recommend installing a higher quality Roof Deck Protection such as a GAF/ELK Deck Armour. For a relatively small additional cost, you’ll be rewarded with a much more reliable Roof Deck Protection.
Most materials used for roofing allows you to install the new roofing over the existing roofing. With metal materials, you can rest assured that this is possible. This is an advantage of metal roofing. You can avoid further expenses and work because you can skip the part of tearing or ripping off shingles. One thing to take note of: furring strips will be used to raise metal roofing when being installed over existing roof.
If your property is a semi detached or terraced house then it is best to have all the gutters relined in one go. Otherwise you will need to seal a roofing contractors joint as I pointed out earlier sealants are a short term solution at best. Spending a fortune on an expensive liner and sealing it to the neighbours gutter with a sealant is a big no-no. It will leak on that joint, it is just a case of when.

Shingle roofs come from different materials such as wood, slate (stone) and asphalt. Wood shingles made of cedar, spruce or treated pines are smooth on both sides. Cedar shingles are brown or reddish when new, but turn gray in the first year. Wood shingles can shrink, warp or splinter over time. They are also susceptible to termite infestation and fire.
